The other night, I read an article from the Wall Street Journal lamenting the time-consuming nature of the typical meal kit. The co-authors make the case that most Americans don’t like to cook, even when they don't have to do the meal planning and grocery shopping. Blue Apron, Sun Basket, PeachDish and other popular delivery services ship customers the ingredients, but still require a minimum of 30 minutes (if not an hour plus) to finish chopping, dicing, and sautéing to get dinner on the table, not to mention the time spent cleaning up the kitchen afterward. For many busy Americans, this is simply too time-consuming.I found this sentiment reflected in a recent conversation with a friend’s dad. A group was standing around discussing the various meal kits we had tried, and I asked which boxes he was trying these days. I was surprised when he said he was fed up with meal delivery boxes. A longtime fan of HelloFresh and a handful of the other services, this 50-something avid cook had canceled all his subscriptions for the sake of time. While he loved getting to try new recipes, he was put off by the mess. Three nights a week of cooking from a box left him with a sink full of dirty dishes he was wary of cleaning. What is Freshly?
Freshly is a prepared meal delivery service that offers its weekly subscription customers a variety of heat-and-eat lunch and dinner entrees. Freshly got its start in January of 2015, when co-founders Carter Comstock and Michael Wystrach launched a business that would make eating healthy easier. Before Freshly, Wystrach worked as an investment banker, putting in long work days that didn’t leave ample time for meal prep. He began experimenting with food to take to the office, then decided his ready to heat-and-eat meals offered a viable model to sell to others. Partnering with Comstock, he left the investment banking world to focus full time on his new venture. The company has since raised funding over four rounds, with cash pouring in from big names like Nestle, Insight Venture Partners, and Highland Capital Partners. When we originally ordered this is service in 2018, Freshly had 24 lunch/dinner entrees and five breakfast options on the weekly menu. All Freshly meals are gluten-free with no refined sugars or artificial ingredients. I’m a huge fan of Freshly’s focus on “high-quality proteins, heart-healthy fats, and nutrient-dense carbohydrates” and its commitment to whole foods. Most meals range between 400 and 600 calories per serving but are surprisingly filling thanks to the high protein content. Worrying about the environmental impact of all the packaging? Don’t! This meal plan thought through making its deliveries as eco-friendly as possible, so you can order without the guilt. With Freshly, you can dispose of everything from the non-toxic ice packs to the denim-insulated box, to the containers that hold the individual food portions responsibly by recycling according to the company’s instructions. Here’s the breakdown of how to dispose of each packaging component:- Cardboard box: put in your regular recycling
- Ice packs: cut the corner off and drain the non-toxic, biodegradable gel into your trash can. Avoid putting this down the drain as it can clog your pipes. The plastic bag goes to recycling.
- Meal sleeves: made from cardboard, these may go into the regular recycling as well (after your finished reading all the fun facts)
- Meal containers: after rinsing off the food residue, these are recyclable
Our Freshly Experience
After taking the requisite pictures for the blog, we eagerly sorted through the meal boxes trying to remember who had ordered what. Despite my husband’s protests, I claimed the meatloaf while he opted for the three-bean ancho chili. I poked holes in the corner of the plastic wrap covering each meal tray, then popped each in the microwave for a 3-minute spin on the rounder. After letting it rest for a minute, I tried to peel off the plastic wrap like it was one of those Lean Cuisines from back in the day. It didn’t budge. Then I consulted the instructions again and saw where they said to cut around the edge of the plastic wrap to get to the food. Much easier. Within seconds, I had the meals transferred from the boxes to our plates. Here’s a quick overview of the meals we tried:- Homestyle Meatloaf with Creamy Potatoes and Spinach

Reheating Freshly Food
Nothing gets much easier than three minutes of microwaving. No prep time, no dirty cookware – Freshly makes the American dream of instant-gratification, low maintenance healthy eating a reality. I wish this service had been around back in my days of working public accounting when I worked ridiculous hours and my semi-healthy eating options were a lettuce wrap from Jimmy John’s or fetching an ice-encrusted Lean Cuisine from the depths of the office freezer. This service is the ultimate meal delivery subscription for the overworked, Soul Cycle groupie, Whole Foods junkie-type of professional. My one criticism of Freshly prep is the plastic wrap covering the top of the food tray. It would be better if this would peel off, rather than having to cut it away with a knife. Seriously though, this was the only thing I had to complain about.
Three minutes in the microwave was all it took to prep the hearty Three Bean Ancho Turkey Chili.
email recieved saying meals were delivered 3 days early at 10:00 at night. no pkg in sight. when I called they said they had no record of my order yet they took money from my account. I do not recommend them.
Freshly is Outstanding if you can afford it.
5 star food.. 3 star price. 4 stars overall. With shipping costs, freshly averages over 10 dls a meal. No left overs. Freshly could take over the world if they could figure out how to significantly reduce total cost of meals. Great food but too expensive (for me) to stay on subscription.
Oh and I read some bad reviews of the food. Absolutely do not believe them..food is great, packaged perfectly and always delivered on time.. I am sure they are plain old trolls or maybe competitors trolls. Good food!

The first order was late 24 hours late! and the customer service was so rude! I canceld the subscription immidiately
Delivery options extremely limited
Do not sign up without triple checking what delivery dates are available in your area. The purpose for me was to help me through the work week, which I assume is true for most people and the main point of the service. So I needed early in the week, but I could only get Thursday deliveries. I signed up for that initially hoping I could change future weeks, but no. The best I could get was Wednesday or Saturday, and even those days only several weeks away. Even the Thursday delivery didn’t arrive till after dinnertime. Customer service showed no interest in being more flexible.
If you want airline food for an exorbitant amount, look no further.
This is on par with airline food. I would never recommend it to anyone. It’s greasy, tasteless, and looks as appetizing as airline food. In my meal today, I found a long hair. This stuff is NASTY. I am so mad I wasted my money on this – and it was NOT CHEAP.
No taste, mashed potatoes like wall plaster, veggies "MEH."
I honestly had higher expectations for this. First order was screwed up, shipped two items I would never order. If you’re going to substitute why not ask the customer what they would like instead. I’m starting to feel like their production is like a fast food order, it’s bound to be screwed up somewhere. The chicken or meat is “ok” -nothing to write home about, the vegetables should have more flavor to them, very bland. The “creamy mashed potatoes” with the turkey have the consistency and taste of wall plaster. I tried to contact them to ask if the potatoes were dehydrated synthetic potatoes, got the bot who doesn’t know d*ck, and it won’t take you to a real person, so called and wound up with someone who doesn’t speak English as a first language, probably in the Philippines. The novelty wore off very quickly, it’s not even worth it with a coupon. You eat one of these and it makes you yearn for something with taste. You would have to be a masochist to try and survive on these. I wouldn’t even give it to my dog, and they probably gummed up the garbage disposal.
Salty TV dinners
This stuff isn’t even mediocre. It is salty or it would be tasteless. I remember when I used to buy the same thing at Walmart for a buck each. Don’t waste your money, stuff out of the freezer case is just as good.
Mystery Meat Meals
My husband referred to most of the meals as ‘Mystery Meat’ meals. Although there is time involved, going back to Home Chef.

Just canceled after 4 deliveries. Meals are great. A bit expensive per serving. This issue was packaging. 3rd week meals were packed on a slant so food slid to one side. Contacted them via email since chat is only a useless bot. Very nice response. Today the box looked like it had been dropped off the truck and again the meals packed on a slant. While attractive packing it doesn’t work for non frozen meals.
Great for 1!
I’ve been doing Freshly’s for a month and a half now! We’ve skipped a week or so here and there, but it’s always easy to skip and re-select later. My husband travels a lot, so I LOVE being able to heat up a Freshly meal when he’s gone. It saves a lot of time and money when eating for 1! Some of the veggies need a bit more seasoning, but over all taste great! Just make sure you plate it.

We're Big Fans
Surprisingly great quality and taste. We’ve had different meals now for two weeks and it’s proper portions, very fresh, and obviously chef delivered dishes. I would call it gourmet Healthy Choice, and worth every penny and still less than 1/2 the price of going out. We save a lot of time not cooking, getting a very well balanced and properly portioned dinner with minimal effort. We’re big fans.
Great food but deliveries are never on time.
While the food is really good I have to say we’ve never had one delivery arrive on time. We always get it the following day. That’s my only complaint.
Vegetarian Options
Hi, I just want to let others like me know that freshly is going to be discontinuing vegetarian options. According to the email I got, they will no longer be offering vegetarian options. So, if this is something you are looking for, Freshly is not the option for you.

Ordered freshly for about 5 months. Quit 3 times.
1st time ordered exotic meals and they were ok. Not worth what we paid. Cancelled.
My son came home from school so I figured I would try again. They delivered wrong order. I cancelled but tried again after I realized it was probably a post office thing.
My son liked random meals sent erroneously so I changed my meal plan to 12 online to give him meals he could eat. More generic meals ( pepper steak, pasta ) were actually pretty good. But the next week they changed us back to 6 meals for no reason and no notification. Since I wanted the same meals, I didn’t check website.
I’m done. Called and ordered for next week and I will cancel. I need a service to be reliable. For $9 a meal they should taste great and be delivered reliably.
I know of older people who may consider this service because they can no longer cook. I don’t believe this service has their act together enough for that.
BTW when your order gets screwed up, they can’t send more food… you have to wait for next order.

Get it together Freshly
we tried Freshly for several months and feel like it is now going downhill. They cut out the meatloaf and potatoes dish and beef meatballs dish – which were our favorites and no longer have breakfast dishes. Instead, they have several Indian dishes. Their vegetables often are string beans (yugh) and broccoli. Lacking imagination.

I do compare it to great food in business class, so I feel one needs to add a side salad or spinach to the meal.

Healthy, Filling, Easy, & DELICIOUS!
I needed a break from chopping, dicing, and dirtying up my kitchen from the mess made after using so many of the other meal kit services. Freshly was exactly what I needed. The food was delicious, healthy, filling, easily prepared, and delivered on-time. I had a great turkey chili, braised rosemary pork, and a very filling southwest chicken bowl. I will definitely be ordering this service again.
I'll Never Buy a Frozen Meal Again
Just tried the first couple of meals from my Freshly delivery and couldn’t be happier! The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and moist, and the loaded cauliflower was divine. These are the perfect meals for a hectic week, whether you need something quick on-the-go at work, or something easy to pop in the microwave after a long day at the office. A huge upgrade from those frozen Lean Cuisines I used to buy! Highly recommend
