We tried 2-person plan and received a box with three entrees. After unpacking the box (see the video here), we surveyed our options on the colorful recipe cards.Parmesan-Crusted Chicken with Lemon-Basil Orzo Salad
Starving and anxious to give the service a try, we decided to feast on a lunch of Parmesan-Crusted Chicken with Lemon-Basil Orzo Salad. We pulled the ingredients out of the plastic bag and skimmed through the instructions.I laid out the ingredients to dredge the chicken, a process that involved coating each piece of meat in flour, then dipping it in whipped eggs (pre-whipped by Gobble chefs), and finally, giving it a generous coating of parmesan and Panko crumbs. Meanwhile, the husband heated up oil in the Le Creuset.Once the chicken was sufficiently coated, it hit the pan for an initial browning… …before finding its way to the oven to finish cooking. Meanwhile, I set about slicing the cherry tomatoes, green onions, and Persian cucumber for the salad. The instructions also indicated we were to heat the pre-cooked orzo in the microwave. As we don’t have a microwave, we simply submerged the unopened package in a bowl of hot water. The final tossed salad created a beautiful, colorful bed for our delightfully crusted chicken. Though it took a bit longer than 15 minutes to cook everything, the meal was exquisite and extremely filling. In fact, we were so full the rest of the day that we just ate a snack for dinner.Baked Salmon with Asparagus & Bearnaise Sauce
For our second Gobble meal, we tried the Baked Salmon dish. This entrée is off the Gobble Lean & Clean menu, which features grain-free meals with lean proteins and healthy fats, for under 600 calories. With only five ingredients (which included a pre-made Bearnaise Sauce), this meal was incredibly straightforward and quick to prepare. Initially, I wondered if this meal would be filling enough, given the lower calorie count. However, we were both pleasantly surprised at the generously large pieces of salmon. Another winner!Meyer Lemon Gnocchi with Asparagus, Basil Pesto, and Goat Cheese
We saved the gnocchi to serve as our end-of-the-week splurge, and boy, we were not disappointed! Of all the Gobble meals we tried, this vegetarian one was our favorite. The gnocchi were delightfully chewy and paired well with the peppery pesto and tangy goat cheese. If this came up again on the menu, I would order this one a second time. In fact, we enjoyed the gnocchi so much that I’m planning on making my own homemade potato gnocchi this week!Pros and Cons of Gobble Meal Kits
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience of cooking with Gobble, but here are some pros and cons to consider before you order.Pros:
- Fast prep times: While it may not be feasible for the unseasoned chef to cook all the meals in under 15 minutes, the Gobble kitchen’s prep work does make this one of the fastest cook-and-eat meal kits that we’ve tried.
- Fewer dishes: Some meal delivery services offer rather extravagant entrees that require dragging out every pot, pan, and utensil in your utensil arsenal. Our meal prep with Gobble did require more than a single pan, but we found that overall, most clean-up was usually done before the meal finished cooking.
- Lean & Clean options: The Lean & Clean menu has excellent options for people following a low-carb, low-calorie diet, and may even work for those following a keto lifestyle.
Cons:
- Price: At $11.99 per serving, this service may be cost prohibitive for some people. However, it is still cheaper (and healthier) than eating out or picking up a to-go order.
- Dietary options: While Gobble does have Lean & Clean options, this service does not accommodate all dietary restrictions and preferences (i.e. paleo, vegan, organic, etc.). You can always view the ingredients in each recipe before you order your meals for the week.
- Meats: Gobble’s meat portions are generous, but if you’re into only eating grass-fed, wild-caught, pasture-raised proteins, then Gobble may not work for you.
Delicious, filling meals that were easy to prep!
We’ve tried several of the meal kits and often feel frustrated at how much time the recipes take to prepare (not to mention the amount of clean-up time afterwards). Gobble’s recipes were straightforward and fast, and prepping them didn’t leave much of a mess. Portions were also generous! Curious to try more dishes off of the Lean & Clean menu, since these are healthier.
