Real Sun Basket Reviews, Cost Breakdowns, & Promo Codes That Work!

Weekly delivery of seasonal, organic ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes

Sun Basket proudly offers easy, delicious meals made from fresh, USDA-certified organic ingredients responsibly sourced from American farms, fisheries, and ranches. These subscription boxes, unlike Blue Apron, are ideal for those trying to stick to a specific diet plan. In addition to its original Paleo, Gluten-Free, and Vegetarian dinner recipes, Sun Basket now accommodates the Pescatarian and Mediterranean diets. For the health-conscious eater, this service also offers Carb-Conscious, Lean & Clean (low-calorie, gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free meals that may work as a keto meal kit), and Diabetes-Friendly options. This is one of the best meal kits available for those with tricky dietary restrictions. As a bonus, Sun Basket also serves up breakfast, lunch, and healthy snacking options to make all your food needs a snap.

Receive a weekly box full of pre-measured ingredients along with easy-to-follow dinner recipes designed to be ready in half an hour. Curious what’s on the menu? Past recipes include delights like speedy, but delicious Seared Steaks with Brussels sprouts and chipotle mustard vinaigrette, Southeast Asian shrimp and rice bowls with edamame slaw, and Miso-ginger ground pork and summer squash donburi. These offerings may sound fancy, but the pre-measured ingredients and easy-to-follow recipe cards make putting together a weekday gourmet dinner a breeze! Tack-on a breakfast of sous-vide egg bites, Greek yogurt and Paleo granola, or Organic juices, and add a lunch of West African tomato soup or a pre-made curry bowl and you’re all set for a day of guilt-free, delicious eating. With the additional option to add proteins (like sirloin steaks, crab cakes, and lemon-pepper chicken breasts), snacks (like hummus, health bars, nuts, and jerky), and pastas (like lobster ravioli and miso ramen), the only reason you’ll need to go to the grocery store is to stock up on toilet paper (but that’s what Amazon is for, right?).

With all the above options, the pricing of Sun Basket’s meal kits can be a little tricky to figure out, so here’s the skinny. Sun Basket’s Classic Plan offers delivery of 2-4 recipes a week for 2 or 4 people, with a price per serving ranging from $10.99-$12.99 (the more you order, the cheaper it is). Within this plan, you can choose your meals from any recipe on the current week’s menu. For our thoughts on this plan, check out our full Sun Basket review below. The Family Plan, on the other hand, offers 2, 3 or 4 kid-friendly recipes a week for a family of four, for a flat $10.99 per serving. With the Family Menu, you can choose from six family-friendly recipes (these recipes are also available on the classic plan). With either plan, you can include breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and other add-ons in your box for an additional cost, if available in your area.

In addition to healthy ingredients, Sun Basket is also eco-friendly, with recyclable, compostable packaging. The boxes (made from kraft paper) and insulation (made from paper) can both go in your recycling bin. For delivery during summer months or to warmer parts of the country, Sun Basket adds extra insulation to its subscription boxes. This “High Heat Zone Insulation” for these meal kits is made from reclaimed denim wrapped in #4 plastic. You may have to get more creative about recycling this insulation as not every drop-off center accepts these items (though the cotton denim will biodegrade in the landfill). You can safely drain the water and non-GMO cotton ice packs, then recycle the cotton and plastic. You can dispose of the plastic spice bags, containers, and jars at most recycling facilities.

    Very disappointing meal service

We tried Sun Basket for 2 weeks worth of 3 meals for 2 each week. It was very disappointing overall. The menu items and ingredients don’t have any depth. They seem to require using every pot, pan, and dish you have to complete. The flavors are marginal or bland. The menu options seem very limited, so we found it very difficult to come up with 3 potential meals each week.

One of the meals we received, when opening the bag, we saw a (been rotten for a while) apple, an onion, sweet potato, small bag of cabbage, and a small container of broth. No seasonings, no sauces, no chef inspired flavors. The cost of the meal isn’t worth the time, energy, and disappointing flavors that follow.

Out of the 6 meals we did have one that was flavorful and met expectations…but 1 of 6 isn’t very good odds.

Spend your hard earned $ on companies who care about your experience - skip SunBasket

Not reliable, really awful user experience, and poor customer support. The market for meal kits is far too saturated to select a company that put little time and value into production and customer satisfaction.

Not user friendly app or website when it comes to cancelling or putting on hold. Very disappointed

App and website not user friendly. Had very much difficulty trying to put on hold for one week. I am very compuer literate but it would not let me do it. Then try to get a hold of someone. Ridiculous

    Love it!

I’ve been using Sunbasket for almost two years and I love it. The quality of the food and recipes are excellent. I find that it’s actually a good value when you consider the quality of the organic ingredients and the time you save not having to meal plan, shop, and find recipes.

    Tried to like it, but....

I’m ambivalent about the service which we tried for a month. I liked the quality and variety of the ingredients. Most of the dishes were okay, one or two were good, a few blah. As somebody said, there is virtually no customer support. About the sustainability of the service: exterior packaging can be recycled, the cold packs can be melted & discarded or “composted” (their word) but the tiny interior packages are made of plastic. The recipe cards were helpful. Price point is rather expensive for what you get. I cancelled after a month.

    Food Poisoning

Food poisoning!!! My entire family shared only one meal – our sun basket subscription delivery meal containing a fajita dish, along with other meals. Within hours I woke up with stomach pains. I found myself laying in bed trying not to barf, until ultimately I puked my guts out. My husband and 14 month old baby also threw up in the night following the meal. My husband and I missed work the next day, and we’re unable to eat normally the day following. Never again.

Plagued by delivery, production and customer service issues

I was a subscriber for 7 weeks. on 6 of those weeks, the meals arrived a day later than scheduled. The company kept blaming “production problems” but had me switch delivery days so that the meals would be delivered by FedEx rather than Lasership. No improvement. The meals are fine, but pricey. The company does not offer any price concession for late meals and, frankly, doesn’t seem very apologetic. We have cancelled and will find a service that is more reliable and offers more attentive customer service.

    Delicious paleo meals, but time-consuming

Loved that this service had paleo-friendly, organic meals, which most of the services out there don’t offer. The Sun Basket site says most meals take 30 minutes to cook, but I found that this was not the case. All the recipes I tried took 45 minutes or more – definitely not one of most time-efficient services I’ve tried. Overall, thought the food was good and would probably order again.

    Healthy, Fresh, Organic, & Simple

This past week we had the turkey chili, steak with New Mexico salsa, and chicken with olive tapenade. All 3 of these meals were very simple to prepare and minimized the number of pots/pans getting dirty. We have tried a number of different meal delivery services and we were excited about Sun Basket because of the variety of diets & plans that it offers. It checked off a number of our ideal boxes – paleo, organic, sustainable, gluten-free, and a few others. Overall, we really enjoyed the meals. They weren’t overly difficult to prepare, and they didn’t try too hard to craft ethnic recipes (like some services do). There were a few hiccups with the packaging. 2 out of the 3 spice packets lost their lids and seasoned a bit too soon and few too many things inside the paper bags. We salvaged enough out of the bottom of the bag to use for the meal, so it didn’t ruin the meal, but it seems like an issue that needs sorting out. Our turkey chili was good, but lacking something. I find most chili is better the 2nd day, so maybe it just needed longer to simmer on the stove (we were hungry and didn’t want to wait). The highlights of the two other recipes were the salsa & olive tapenade. It was nice that these came already prepared, but part of me felt like the “key” ingredient of the recipe was something that I didn’t actually contribute to preparing. We’re going to continue our journey trying as many services as possible, but I have a feeling we’ll be coming back to Sun Basket very soon!
